WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the following statement on President Biden’s executive orders on voting:
“Fifty-six years ago, hundreds of civil rights advocates marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge peacefully insisting on equal voting rights. They were met with violence and brutality. We have come a long way since that tragic day, but people across the country continue to face mounting barriers to their fundamental right to vote. It is unacceptable and it is un-American, which is why last month, with nineteen of my Democratic colleagues, I asked the Biden administration to take executive actions to strengthen our democracy.
"Today, President Biden is signing an executive order advancing many of the actions we called for, including bolstering voter registration efforts, improving Vote.gov, analyzing barriers to voting for people with disabilities, providing information and voter registration services to incarcerated people, and increasing voting access for active duty military and other overseas voters. Addressing the challenges facing our democracy will require both legislative and executive responses and I will continue to be a steadfast partner in the fight to implement long-needed democracy reforms.
"As Chair of the Senate Rules Committee and one of the senators leading the For the People Act, I believe we must pass both the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure that Americans’ fundamental right to vote and participate in our democracy is protected.”
